Saw Palmetto Benefits An Enlarged Prostate—True or False?

by Louis Miller on September 24, 2010

Many trials and studies on saw palmetto benefits in treating an enlarged prostate have shown great Prostate Formulaeffectiveness.

Another recent study showed that saw palmetto benefits were no better than placebo (sugar pills with no active ingredients).

What’s the truth?  Here’s the background:

Saw Palmetto Benefits

A meta-analysis (a review of other studies) of eighteen trials covering over 2,900 men showed that saw palmetto was from 25 to 43 per cent more effective than placebo capsules on the four main symptoms of BPH, or “benign prostatic hyperplasia.”

Some of those trials also compared saw palmetto to Proscar, the most commonly-prescribed drug for enlarged prostates.  The saw palmetto benefits were found to be about the same as the benefits of Proscar.

Another large study, double-blind and placebo-controlled, asked 1,069 subjects to rate the improvement in their quality of life after six months of treatment with saw palmetto, or with Proscar.  The results were almost identical.  The improvement was rated at 69% for saw palmetto, compared to 73% for Proscar—and without the side effects.

A Study Designed to Fail

More recently, a study concluded that saw palmetto was ineffective.  It seems pretty clear that the investigators had an agenda, however.  Almost all studies that have shown saw palmetto benefits have used a dosage of 320 milligrams of a standardized saw palmetto extract.  This study used 160 milligrams.  Why would you use half the dosage demonstrated to be effective?  You wouldn’t, unless you wanted the study to fail.

Saw palmetto benefits the enlarged prostate, as do other commonly-used herbs for treating the symptoms of prostate enlargement such as pygeum, & stinging nettle,  because of the sterols it contains.  Sterols are compounds that interfere with the activity of an enzyme that converts testosterone to dihydrotestosterone (DHT), which builds up in the prostates of older men and seems to cause, or at least be associated with prostate enlargement.  Reducing DHT seems to stop prostate growth, and even reverse it.

Something Better

Now there is something even better than saw palmetto.  It’s called Ayurstate.  It’s a blend of eight different herbs used in India for thousands of years to treat enlarged prostate symptoms.  It contains some 50 compounds that have beneficial effects on the prostate and the body in general, without side effects of prescription drugs.  Here are just a few:

  • Reduces DHT in the same way as saw palmetto or Proscar and similar prescription drugs.
  • Relaxes muscles in the prostate and bladder, reducing pressure on the urethra and allowing better urine flow.
  • Reduces inflammation in the urethra and throughout the body
  • Adjusts testosterone/estrogen balance
  • Allows more complete emptying of the bladder, reducing frequency of urination
  • Minimizes getting up during the night
  • Relieves pain and discomfort
  • . . . and many more

Ayurstate is so effective in so many ways that it’s guaranteed.  If a user isn’t 100% satisfied after 120 days, he can get 110% of his money back.

There’s much more information on the Ayurstate website—it’s like a prostate encyclopedia, and well worth a visit.

I review every Prostate remedy out there. I REALLY like this one —> Ayurstate
