Saw Palmetto Side Effects– None To Speak Of

by Louis Miller on January 29, 2011

Saw Palmetto is thought to be the 5th most widely-used herb in the United States, primarily for its proven usefulness in reducing the symptoms of enlarged prostate glands in Saw Palmetto--Serenoa repensmiddle-aged and older men.  The side effects of Saw Palmetto are minimal—almost non-existent.

A very few men suffer from an upset stomach from taking Saw Palmetto, but that can almost always be taken care of by taking it with meals, rather than on an empty stomach.

For a long time, researchers weren’t exactly sure how Saw Palmetto worked.  The most popular theory was that it inhibits the activity of 5-alpha-reductase, an enzyme that converts testosterone into dihydrotestosterone, or “DHT”.  When it builds up in prostatic tissue, DHT causes additional growth of the tissue, so by reducing the DHT conversion, you reduce the DHT buildup and the tissue proliferation.

More recently, a randomized, double-blind study published in the Journal “Urology” demonstrated that in addition to subjective judgments that symptoms were improved, there was an actual reduction of swelling in enlarged prostate tissue.  Strangely, in this study, the investigators ruled out a hormonal mechanism, even though the reduction in swelling was just what would be predicted from the presumed hormonal effect.

Many mainstream physicians pooh-pooh studies and reports of effectiveness of any natural substances because of the lack of double-blind, placebo-controlled (and very expensive) trials.  Here is at least one such study, done at UCLA, which did confirm Saw Palmetto’s effectiveness.

Furthermore, there are essentially no side effects from Saw Palmetto use.  The principal investigator stated that “[Saw Palmetto Extract] is extremely safe . . . its safety has never been seriously questioned, and with the exception of occasional stomach upset, no side effects have been reported.”  He went on to state that its use has never been associated with reduced libido or erectile dysfunction.

Other studies have shown that Saw Palmetto is about as effective as Finasteride (Proscar), which is the most commonly prescribed pharmaceutical drug for the treatment of enlarged prostate symptoms.

All this is good news for men who don’t want the expense and the side effects of prescription drugs.

We’ve found something even better than Saw Palmetto.  It’s a blend of eight herbs, several of which have been used in India for thousands of years to treat prostate problems.  Some of its ingredients work in the same way that Saw Palmetto works.  It’s called Ayurstate, and it treats many of the symptoms of an enlarged prostate.  It will reduce nighttime bathroom trips, daytime urgency, and dribbling.  It will reduce inflammation.  It will strengthen urine flow, and alleviate pain and discomfort.  It will also increase semen production.  It treats the underlying causes, not just the symptoms. Ayurstate is so effective that it is 110% guaranteed.  If you don’t like the results, you get your money back, plus 10% for your trouble.

You can get much more information on the Ayurstate website.  It’s like an easy-to-read encyclopedia of the prostate and its problems.  It’s well worth a visit.
